David Jones Moore
The history of our line of the Moore family, as far as we now know it, begins with David Jones Moore who was born in Virginia on January 17, 1803. Nothing is known of his father or mother, how they came to America or his early life in Virginia, but we do know according to a census taken in 1830 in Giles County Tennessee his date of birth and that he was married to Mary Easly Phillips on November 20, 1828. It is recorded that Mary was born in North Carolina in 1812. The early 1800’s were tumultuous years following the American Revolution of 1776. Our young nation was struggling to survive and the British continuing to raid American merchant vessels and impress American sailors into service on English ships. This led to the War of 1812 with England, which was won in 1814 in and finally ended England’s tyranny over her former colonies. Many new settlers new in America moved west to claim lands for themselves and “to pursue the blessings of liberty”.
This is probably the case with David Jones Moore as he move into and settled in western Tennessee where he met Mary Phillips. David and Mary had ten (10) children from 1829 to 1854. The second child, Joseph Addison Moore, who later became the father of our Luke Pryor Moore, was born in 1831. Sometime between 1840 and 1850 David moved the family to Limestone County, Alabama. The census of 1850 recorded the David Jones Moore family living in Limestone County, Alabama, with his occupation listed as a farmer and a landowner with a value of the real estate at $1,500. Joseph Addison Moore, age 19 at the time, was living with his father and mother and other siblings, with his occupation listed as a “clerk”, the position he held as “clerk” is unclear, since he had yet to be elected County Clerk. Joe’s parents, David and Mary both died in 1857 and were buried in a private “old family burying ground” near Pettusville, Alabama, north of Athens which may be located on the family farm of David Jones Moore.
